Sustainability timeline

Since the mid 1990s, we have been exploring and defining how we can, within our direct sphere of influence, contribute to a more sustainable world.


  • Driving Proactive Safety Culture is key to getting higher engagement and safer worksites. In 2020 focus is set on becoming “Outstanding in Lifting, loading and lowering operations.


  • Skanska aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in its own operations and its value chain (scope 1, 2 and 3) by 2045.
  • For Skanska’s development units (Residential Development and Commercial Property Development), the interim target is a 50 percent decrease in carbon emissions by 2030 – including the value chain of these projects (scope 1, 2 and 3). The base year for scope 1 and 2 is 2015, while the base year for scope 3 is 2020.
  • Celbrating our 15th consecutive Health and Safety Week. Working together, supports making the industry safer with an increased level of healthy and safer worksites for everyone.

  • Top ranking for the second consecutive year in the Capital Goods category in the Sustainable companies 2019 at Nasdaq Nordic, by Lunds University and Dagens Industri in Sweden.
  • Skanska ranked #20 on Fortune’s Change the World List 2019.


  • Our second set of Green bonds was issued at a value of SEK 1 billion. It drives innovation for sustainable solutions initially in our commercial development projects.
  • Our commitment to Health and well-being, includes ensuring healthy workplaces to keep our colleagues both physically and mentally fit.

  • Fossil Free Sweden, an initiative of the Swedish Government, charged Skanska to lead the work of creating a roadmap for achieving a climate-neutral construction sector in Sweden. The roadmap was endorsed by more than 65 stakeholders and handed over to the Government in April 2018.
  • BoKlok was the first residential developer in Sweden to make a large-scale commitment to solar power, which will lower residents' energy costs and reduce carbon emissions.
  • Skanska received top sustainability ranking in the Capital Goods category in the Sustainable Companies 2018 survey, which evaluated companies listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, by Lund University’s School of Economics, financial newspaper Dagens Industri (Today’s Industry) and Aktuell Hållbarhet (Current Sustainability) magazine.   • Plan – Do – Check – Act. These are critical steps to reduce accidents and to make construction worksites safer.

  • In 2017, 44 percent of Skanska's total construction revenue came from projects with green solutions focused on carbon, energy, materials and water.
  • Our Boston 121 Seaport development was built with an elliptical design, which required less cladding, it reduced material needs, leading to lower cost and less carbon emissions.


  • Skanska was included in the CDP's Climate A list, recognized for our management of climate change risks.
  • Our re-articulated value; Care for Life explains our view and how we strive to work with Safety across Skanska. "We work safely, or not at all" and "We never walk by if we notice unsafe actions.".

  • Skanska has an ongoing leading role in developing the two leading sustainability infrastructure rating systems; CEEQUAL and Envision.
  • Both the Expo Line Phase 2 light rail expansion in Los Angeles and the I-4 Ultimate public-private partnership (PPP) in Florida, achieved Envision Platinum.


  • During 2015 there has been an increased emphasis on visible leadership, health and well-being as well as providing good opportunities to exchange knowledge and good practice across Skanska.

  • Skanska was actively involved in the EU project RenoValue, targeting integration of energy efficiency into building valuation.
  • Our Deep Green office and workshop project Bentley Works redevelopment in the UK; achieved net zero primary energy, zero waste, zero hazardous materials and net zero water.


  • We launched our first Green Corporate Bond.
  • May 5 to 11, 2014, we are celebrating our 10th Global Skanska Safety Week by reaching out to our colleagues in the industry for shared activities.

  • Skanska co-chaired UNEP-SBCI's Greening the Building Supply Chain taskforce.
  • We developed the world's most northerly energy-plus renovated office – Powerhouse Kørbo, Norway.


  • Skanska Global Safety Leadership Team has initiated a Safety Peer Review program across Skanska to share knowledge and experience between one Business Unit to another.

  • Skanska co-sponsored the WBCSD report The Business Case for Green Building.
  • We are again ranked #1 in our sector in the Nordics and first time #1 company in Sweden all sectors.
  • Awarded the FT Arcelor –Mittal Boldness in Business Awards: Corporate Responsibility/Environment.
  • The NGO HQ, the Open Garden, includes the first passive house office building in the Czech Republic.
  • Väla Gård, Sweden's first Deep Green project receives 95 points out of 110 in LEED, highest score in Europe to date.
  • Brent Civic Centre in UK is the first public building to achieve BREEAM Outstanding.


  • UN Global Compact accepts our 2011 “Communication on Progress” and grants “GC Active” status.
  • Skanska is committed to be a leader in Safety. Our Safety Road Map will support our journey to zero accidents.

  • Skanska retains FTS4Good Social responsibility Index place.
  • Skanska co-authors the ENCORD Construction CO2e Measurement Protocol.
  • Järva Gård and Å-kvarteren Swedish highway projects were first in Sweden to certify to CEEQUAL International.
  • The Skanska built Hollywood House in the UK, achieved 50% less energy than before refurbishment – LEED Platinum office.
  • The residential buidlings Coldharbour Lane, were first in the UK to use Skanska’s ModernaHus concept.
  • The highway M25 in the UK, set new standards for highway projects. Realized significant environmental and financial savings.
  • Skanska House in Finland used pioneering 4D Building Information Modeling (BIM) to plan the construction.
  • Green Towers, first commercial building project in Poland to receive LEED Platinum pre-certification.


  • Safety Road Map launched as part of Skanska’s drive to reach its 2015 milestones.

  • Skanska signed ENCORDS (The European Network of Construction companies for Research and Development) sustainability charter including its commitment to a safe and healthy work environment.

  • Skanska maintains FTSE4Good Social Responsibility Index place.
  • Skanska UK overall winner – Sunday Times Best Green Companies Award.
  • Only construction company in the Nordic Carbon Disclosure Project, 2nd year running.
  • Bertschi School is net zero energy and net zero water usage – certified to Living Building Challenge assessment.
  • Österport in Malmö is the first in Europe certified to LEED Platinum, EBOM.
  • Skanska Czech Republic first in the country certified to BS EN 16001 energy management standard.

  • Global Safety Leadership Team formed comprising 14 senior managers from across Skanska including the CEO.

  • New Business Plan for 2015 with a milestone of LTAR 1.0 / million hours, which corresponds to eliminating three out of four work related accidents.

  • Skanska retained place in the FTSE4Good social responsibility index.

  • Skanska builds Blå Jungfrun apartments in Stockholm to be twice as energy efficient as a conventional building.


  • The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) adopted our “Energy Efficiency in Buildings for Facility Managers” guide.
  • Global Safety Stand Downs (GSSDs) are carried out following a work related fatality to pay respect to the individual as well as capture and spread learning to prevent recurrence. GSSDs are held at every Skanska work place across the world involving employees and subcontractors.

  • Co-developed Copenhagen Communique for COP15 with Price of Wales’s Corporate Leaders Group on Climate change.
  • Skanska a founding partner for Polish, Czech and Swedish Green Building Councils.
  • Ethix ranks Skanska 1st in sector – Nordic Six Star SRI study.
  • A McDonald’s restaurant in North Caroline goes Green – one of the first LEED certified in USA.
  • Lindhagensterassen apartment block, Sweden, pioneered solar panels for electric vehicle charging.


  • Executive Site Safety Visits (ESSVs) introduced as the first Global Leading Indicator to demonstrate visible and clear leadership from senior managers.

  • Skanska CDN becomes an EU GreenBuilding Partner. HP3 in Stockholm is registered EU Green Building.
  • Update Code of Conduct.
  • El Totorial Wind Farm generates 100 GWh of energy – largest in Chile on completion.
  • One Kingdom Street is first UK commercial building with full embodied carbon footprint calculation.
  • Refurbishes floor 32 of Empire State Building to LEED Platinum (CI) – first in New York City.


  • Updated Safety Policy and Guidelines. In addition, four Global Safety Standards were introduced on Risk Assessment, Work at Heights, Personal Protective Equipment and Induction. An additional eight global standards were rolled out in 2010.

  • 70% of Business Units operates to Health &Safety system OHSAS 18001.
  • Skanska ranks #1 in Engineering News-Record’s first ever Top Green Contractors.
  • Sustainable Contractor of the year in the UK.
  • Skanska has designed and constructed the first Nordic Swan Eco-labeled house in the Nordic countries.
  • Corona Maintenance Shop & Car Wash in New York is the first LEED certified Maintenance Facility.


  • Dow Jones lists Skanska in their DJSI.
  • New Global Safety Reporting introduced using the one day Lost Time Accident Rate (LTAR) / million man-hours as a common measure of accident performance. LTAR decreased by 50% in the period of 2005-2010 for Skanska employees.

  • In the Czech Republic Skanska built the first non-residential passive energy building founded by the EU.
  • All Skanska operations are updated to ISO 14001:2004 certified status.
  • Skanska Sweden sets the maximum Carbon dioxide/km limit for new cars at 120g.
  • Skanska is listed on the FTSE4Good social responsibility index.
  • Skanska becomes signatory to the European Union’s Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade Initiative.
  • Skanska continues its support of the development of ISO 26000.
  • 60 LEEF Accredited Professionals.
  • The United Nations House in Norway was renovated as an environmentally responsible building.
  • Providence Newberg Medical Center in Oregon becomes the first LEED Gold certified hospital.


  • Skanska holds its first Global Skanska Safety Week. It helps us redouble our efforts to eliminate accidents and gives us a chance to do something new together. It has become the largest safety event in one single company, involving over a quarter of a million employees and subcontractors with numerous activities and training sessions.

  • Skanska Latin America attains certification/registration according to Social Accountability 8000.
  • Skanska Residential Development Nordic is certified to use the Nordic Swan Eco-label.
  • Dow Jones lists Skanska in their DJSI.
  • Skanska is listed on the FTSE4Good social responsibility index.
  • The Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations was launched, listing Skanska as its sole construction representative.
  • 30 LEED Accredited Professionals.
  • Boston Logan International Airport, Terminal A becomes the first LEED Certified airport terminal.


  • Skanska introduces the four Zeros: Zero Accidents, Zero Environmental Incidents, Zero Ethical Breaches and Zero Loss-makers. The fifth zero — Zero Defect was introduced 2007.

  • The CEO, launches the Skanska Safety Strategy with the vision of injury free workplace.

  • Skanska holds its first global Safety Day.

  • Skanska USA has several LEED Accredited Professionals and 10 LEED projects.
  • Skanska joins World Economic Forum’s Partnering Against Corruption Initiative.
  • Skanska established the 4 Zeros: Zero Accidents, Zero Environmental Incidents, Zero Ethical Breaches, and Zero loss-makers
  • Skanska is listed on the FTSE4Good social responsibility index.
  • Dow Jones lists Skanska in their DJSI.
  • Skanska participate and actively supports the adaptation of the tenth principle of the UN Global Compact – anti corruption.
  • Close to 65% of operations use an ISO 9001:2000 management system.


  • A health and safety program at Skanska UK resulted in an OHSAS 18001 certification.
  • Skanska is listed on the FTSE4 Good social responsibility index.
  • Dow Jones lists Skanska in their DJSI.
  • Completed London’s iconic “green” office building, the Swiss Reinsurance headquarters.
  • The 2003 Environmental Prize for Construction is awarded to the Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts.
  • Met Office UK awarded 2004 National Award of the Considerate Contractors Award Scheme.


  • Skanska is among the Founding Committee members of the Disaster Resource Network.
  • Skanska publish its first Sustainability Report.
  • Skanska implements its Code of Conduct.
  • Implementation of the Skanska Code of Conduct, where we commit to provide a safe and healthy working environment.

  • Skanska revises the Environmental Managers Forum (EMF) to SHEMF (Safety, Health and Environment Mangement Forum), attended by heads of safety across Skanska.


  • Skanska is one of several hundred companies to join the UN Global Compact.
  • Skanska was one of the first signatories to the UN Global Compact, subscribing to the ten universally accepted principles of human rights.

  • Skanska in the USA completes its first LEED Silver project, the EPA National Computer Center.


  • Skanska Sweden introduces it first environmental policy for cars.
  • Skanska becomes a member of the U.S. Green Building Council.
  • Skanska construct the Ray& Maria Stata Center at MIT as an environmental responsible building.
